Overview

DropSnip is a screenshot capture and annotation tool for macOS and Windows that runs entirely on your local device. Your privacy is fundamental to our design.

Data Collection

DropSnip does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data. The only requests it makes on its own are the licence check and update check described under Licensing, and neither carries anything about you beyond the licence key you entered. Specifically:

Screenshots are captured and processed entirely on your device. They are never uploaded to any server unless you explicitly use a plugin or action that does so.
Screenshot history is stored in local memory only and is cleared when the app exits. No screenshots are persisted to disk unless you explicitly save them.
Settings and preferences (default action, plugin configuration) are stored locally on your device using OS-native encryption — macOS Keychain on Mac, Windows DPAPI on Windows.
No analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting data is collected or transmitted.
No cookies or tracking mechanisms are used inside the app.

Third-Party Services

DropSnip can optionally connect to services you configure:

Blip — Hands the screenshot to the Blip app installed on your Mac, through the system share sheet or the clipboard. A local handoff; nothing is sent to a Blip server.
Plugins — A plugin manifest names its own network endpoint (URL actions, webhooks, shell commands). DropSnip ships twelve example manifests — Imgur, a generic webhook, Cloudinary, Slack, Discord, GitHub Issues, Google Drive, Amazon S3, Linear, Notion, Jira and Airtable — written to your Application Support folder on first launch and listed in the capture menu from then on. They carry no credentials, and you can disable or delete any of them under Plugins → Manage Plugins. Plugin secrets are stored locally using OS-native encryption.

No data reaches a plugin's service until you have configured that plugin and chosen it from the menu after a capture. The request goes directly from your Mac to that service and never passes through our infrastructure.

Licensing

DropSnip is a paid product. The Windows edition is free to try for 30 days; continued use requires a one-time license purchased at dropsnip.app. The macOS edition is sold on the Mac App Store or directly. When you activate a Gumroad license in the app, validation involves a single HTTPS request to the Gumroad license API containing only the license key you provide — no other personal data is transmitted. Validation results are cached locally and re-verified on launch. The Mac App Store edition makes no such request, and contains no updater; the direct-download edition also checks a signed update feed once a day.

Screen Capture Permissions

DropSnip uses the operating system's native screen-capture APIs. On macOS this requires granting Screen Recording permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Scrolling capture additionally needs Accessibility permission, because it sends scroll events to the window underneath. On Windows no additional permissions are required beyond those any desktop application has.

Website Analytics

This marketing site (dropsnip.app) uses Plausible Analytics, a privacy-focused analytics service that does not use cookies and does not collect personal data. Analytics data is anonymised and aggregated, and is never used to track individuals across sites.
